Earth Dragon Balls

The 7 Earth Dragon Balls

The Earth Dragon Balls are wish orbs created by the Guardian of the EarthKami and were later re-created by Dende. These balls are mainly used on Earth and were the first type of Dragon Balls used in the Dragon Ball series. As the titular objects of the series and objects of great desire for both heroic and villainous purposes, Earth's Dragon Balls have been a driving force behind many major events in the series. They have often proven invaluable in repairing the damage done by the various villains fought by the Dragon Team.

Overview[]

Like all the other types of Dragon Balls, these balls come in a set of 7. When all 7 are gathered, they summon an Eternal Dragon named Shenron, who can grant any wish that doesn't exceed his powers. Once used and Shenron fulfils the user's wish, the Earth Dragon Balls are turned into stone and then scattered to different random locations on Earth, rendering them useless for 365 days before they can be used again.

The limitations of Shenron's power are tied directly to the power and abilities of his creator (Kami, and later Dende). Amongst the rules that have been observed to restrict wishes granted by Shenron are that he cannot:

  • Revive a person that he has revived once before.
  • Revive a person that has died more than one Earth year ago
  • Kill a person whose power exceeds that of his creator.
  • Grant the precise same wish twice.
  • Revive a person who has died of natural causes, including disease and old age.
  • Create true love, or force a person to fall in love.
  • Make a person substantially stronger than their current limits.
  • Transform a Biotechnological Type Android back into an ordinary human being.
  • Make a wish in bumping the limitations of his power like locating a Super Dragon Ball in another universe.

In addition to these rules, wishes have been denied for other reasons.

Before, Shenron was only able to grant the user one wish per summoning, but after Dende re-creates him and the Earth Dragon Balls, Dende upgrades Shenron to grant the user a maximum of three wishes (two if multiple people are revived with one of the wishes).

Cracked Dragon Balls[]

In Dragon Ball GT, when they have accumulated too much Minus Energy, the Earth Dragon Balls become the Cracked Dragon Balls, dark blue in color with black stars. Instead of Shenron, they will summon Black Smoke Shenron - who will not grant wishes but rather unleash the seven Shadow Dragons.

In the story of Planet Eros, these Dragon Balls of Eros with dark blue in color with black stars.

Variations[]

  • Copy Dragon Ball - A weaker copy of the Earth Dragon Balls created by Mr. Popo which appear in Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans. Mr. Popo informs the surviving Dragon Team members (Goku, Gohan, & Krillin) that he created this set via Mimicry after watching Kami (either during Earth Dragon Balls original creation and/or when they were restored after King Piccolo killed Shenron). Unlike the original Earth Dragon Balls, the Shenron produced by the Copy Dragon Balls lack the ability to resurrect the dead, however they are powerful enough to summon the Legendary Super Saiyan Broly (or create a convincing copy of him) that can be fought by the Dragon Team (including the deceased Dragon Team members temporarily revived by Fortuneteller Baba) as a secret boss.

Biography[]

Background[]

Kami creates the Dragon Balls to give the people of Earth hope and encourage acts of bravery after King Piccolo's reign.

Dragon Ball[]

Emperor Pilaf Saga[]

When Emperor Pilaf is about to make his wish to take over the world, Oolong jumps in and wishes for a pair of comfortable underwear.

Fortuneteller Baba Saga[]

During Fortuneteller Baba Saga, Upa used the Dragon Balls to revive his dead father Bora to be alive after Goku located the final Dragon Ball by defeating Fortuneteller Baba's warriors.

King Piccolo Saga[]

During King Piccolo Saga, King Piccolo wished for his youth and his full power to be restored from his first war on Earth, although Chiaotzu almost successfully wishes for King Piccolo's death instead, before he is killed by Piccolo. After his wish, he destroys Shenron in order to prevent anyone else from using the Dragon Balls to challenge his rule. This renders the Dragon Balls temporarily unusable.

Piccolo Jr. Saga[]

After the deaths of Krillin, Chiaotzu and Master Roshi, as well as many more innocent lives, at the hands of King Piccolo, Goku travels to Kami's Lookout after being told of the Dragon Balls' creator by Master Korin. Kami tells that he created the Dragon Balls in order to bring hope and aspiration to humanity, and that they are not simple tools for Goku to abuse, imploring him to take better care of his friends in future. With Goku's assurance, he restores Shenron to life. Bulma and the others quickly notice that the Dragon Balls have become active again and use them to revive all of King Piccolo's innocent victims, including the three dead heroes.

Dragon Ball Z[]

Saiyan Saga[]

At the beginning of the series, Gohan is seen wearing the Four Star Dragon Ball on a hat. This hat was given to him by Goku as a memento of his namesake Grandpa Gohan, who Goku fondly associates the Four Star ball with. After Goku and Raditz are both killed, the remaining Z Fighters resolve to gather the Dragon Balls in order to revive Goku. Whilst they are eventually successfully used for this purpose, knowledge of the Dragon Balls is also transmitted to Nappa and Vegeta via Raditz' Scouter, causing them to come to Earth to attempt to gain immortality. When the Saiyans arrive, they reveal that Piccolo is not from Earth, but is instead an alien race called a Namekian, opening up the possibility of more Dragon Balls existing than just Earth's for the first time. During the battle with the Saiyans, Piccolo is killed, causing Kami, and therefore the Dragon Balls, to cease to be.

Frieza Saga[]

Earth's Dragon Balls are mostly absent from this saga due to Piccolo's death against Nappa. This absence, meaning that those lost in the battle against the Saiyans could not be revived, is why Krillin suggests that the heroes try to find Piccolo's homeworld in the hopes that they also had Dragon Balls. After Piccolo is revived by the Namekian Dragon Balls, so is Kami, and so the Dragon Balls become usable once more. They are used during Goku's battle with Frieza in order to revive everyone that was killed by Frieza and his army.

Cell Saga[]

Future Trunks' timeline is ravaged by the appearance of the Androids and the death of Piccolo at their hands means that there is no way to return any of their victims to life or undo any of their destruction. The Dragon Team did resolve to gather the Dragon Balls during their rampage, but Bulma discovered that the Pilaf Gang had already done so, making a wish for youth (which transforms them into toddlers) moments before the death of Future Piccolo, turning the Dragon Balls to stone forever in Trunks' timeline.

After Piccolo and Kami merge in the main timeline, the Dragon Balls cease to be once more. After the emergence of Cell and the terror that he wreaks on the Earth, the need for access to the Dragon Balls to repair the damage causes Goku to decide to recreate them. He travels to New Namek to ask if one of the surviving Namekian refugees would be willing to fill Kami's vacant position as Earth's Guardian, and also recreate the Dragon Balls. Dende claims that creating entirely new balls would take a long time, but because a statue of Shenron exists unbroken at the Lookout to act as a template, Dende is able to create new balls out of the old earth dragon balls with Shenron as their dragon straight away. Due to his exceptional magical talent, Dende is able to give Shenron three wishes instead of one, but only two if multiple people are revived with a wish. These are used after Cell's defeat to restore his victims to life. The second wish was intended to travel to Namek to revive Goku, who, having been revived by Shenron once before, did not return to life. However, after Goku's decision to remain in Other World, Krillin used the wish to remove the bombs from inside Androids 17 and 18.

Buu Saga[]

Bulma and the others use the Dragon Balls after Majin Vegeta kills hundreds of spectators at the 25th World Martial Arts Tournament, unaware of the release of Majin Buu. Goku, knowing that the Dragon Balls will be needed to reverse any further damage Buu does to the Earth, rushes to stop her but is unable to prevent her using the first wish to revive Vegeta's victims. Goku asks Shenron to save the remaining wish, causing the balls to turn to stone for only 4 months instead of a full year. After Buu begins destroying cities at Babidi's command to lure Piccolo, Goten and Trunks out of hiding, they are quickly led to West City, where Capsule Corporation and the Dragon Radar are. Realizing the risk of being unable to construct another radar and losing easy access to the Dragon Balls, Bulma sends Trunks to retrieve the radar whilst Goku stalls Buu and Babidi.

After Buu's Human Extinction Attack, the majority of Earth's defenders being turned into candy, and the loss of most life on Earth, Piccolo, Trunks, and Goten assume that Dende has also been killed when they escape the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, leaving no way to revive Buu's victims. However, Gohan is able to sense Dende's energy when he returns from training on the Sacred World of the Kai. Earth's Dragon Balls are later presumably destroyed when Kid Buu destroys Earth with his Planet Burst, and return once Earth is restored by the Namekian Dragon Balls. They are used after Buu's defeat to erase memory of Buu from all Earthlings except Goku and his friends and family, allowing Good Buu to live a peaceful life on Earth.

Dragon Ball Super[]

God of Destruction Beerus Saga[]

At some point before the start of the series, the Pilaf Gang manage to gather the Dragon Balls and wish for youth, but are transformed into children due to not being specific enough. They resolve to gather the Balls again in order to become rich and restore their bodies to adulthood. Bulma gathers the Dragon Balls at some point before her birthday party. Goten and Trunks discover a secret compartment containing them on Bulma's cruise ship in a room containing prizes for the bingo draw. They deactivate the security field Bulma set up around the balls. The Pilaf Gang are alerted to them by their Dragon Radar and travel to Bulma's ship, where they are helped on board and given food by Goten and Trunks, unaware that they planned to steal the balls. They are scared by Goten due to his resemblance to Goku, and so give up on the plan and attend Bulma's birthday party instead.

After Beerus arrives to crash the party and threatens to destroy Earth unless the Super Saiyan God appears to challenge him, Goku pleads with him to be allowed to use the Dragon Balls to summon Shenron and find out more about the legend. After Shenron is summoned, he is fearful of the Destroyer God, and respectfully grants a wish to explain the Super Saiyan God ritual. As a result, Vegeta, Trunks, Goten, Gohan, and the unborn Pan (through her mother Videl) empower Goku to a new godly state and he fights Beerus. Although he is unable to defeat Beerus in combat, his tenacity and continual growth through the course of their fight pique Beerus' interest enough that he decides to spare Goku and the Earth, in order to continue visiting to sample its food.

Golden Frieza Saga[]

The Frieza Force, greatly diminished in power and influence in the years following the deaths of Frieza and King Cold at the hands of Future Trunks, as well as the total annihilation of its most elite fighters, the Ginyu Force, Zarbon and Dodoria, have left the once-mighty galactic empire a mere shadow of its former self. The new leader of the force, Sorbet, decides that despite his cruel tendencies, without the fear that Frieza's power inspired in his empire, it is doomed to crumble. He travels to Earth along with Tagoma and Shisami and happen upon the Pilaf Gang, who have once again been trying to gather the Dragon Balls. They are forced to allow Frieza's minions to revive him. Shenron initially warns them against their wish to revive Frieza, as his death was much longer than a year ago, meaning that his body could not be fully revived. Sorbet insists that the wish be granted, and so the pieces of Frieza, precisely as they were sliced by Future Trunks just before he incinerated them, are restored. Shenron tells them that they have two remaining wishes. Sorbet contemplates reviving King Cold, but Mai and Shu quickly rush in and wish for one million Zeni and the world's tastiest icecream. Sorbet, aware that Frieza needs immediate medical attention, spares their lives and quickly departs to their ship as the Dragon Balls scatter. Due to the advances in medical technology since the battle on Namek, Frieza is reconstructed and fully healed.

"Future" Trunks Saga[]

In the anime, Bulma summons Shenron in an attempt to acquire an element she needs to finish the Time Machine she had constructed using her late Future counterpart's notes. Unfortunately for her, Goku attempts to use the opportunity to wish King Kai, Bubbles, and Gregory back to life. After Bulma manages to stop Master Roshi and several others from making frivolous wishes, Gohan reveals that his daughter is ill and Earth-based medical treatments aren't working due to her Saiyan heritage. Seeing Gohan's wish as a reasonable one, Bulma and Goku allow Gohan to wish Pan would be cured which Shenron is able to grant. Goku manages to convince Bulma to let him wish back King Kai, Bubbles, and Gregory in exchange for getting the element she needs from Earth's core. Unfortunately for Bulma, Beerus and Whis grow suspicious and interrupt Goku. Discovering Bulma had constructed Time Machine despite being warned of the dangers during the conflict with Goku Black and Future Zamasu, Beerus and Whis confront Bulma, though fortunately for her he elects to let her live and destroy the Time Machine along Future Bulma's research notes to drive home the message that he will not tolerate the development of anymore Time Machines. Goku attempts to make his wish, but unfortunately it is revealed that there is a time limit to how long Shenron can be summoned and as it had been exceeded, Shenron leaves before Goku can make the wish to the ire of King Kai.

Broly[]

Frieza has Kikono send two weak soldiers to steal Bulma's Dragon Radar and her collected Dragon Balls, in order for Frieza to wish to be 5cm taller. At the time of the theft, Bulma had managed to collect all but one of the Earth Dragon Balls, planning to make herself five years younger.

Alerted to the break in by Trunks while relaxing on her private island with Beerus, Whis, Bulla, Vegeta, and Goku, Bulma reveals the final Dragon Ball is located on the Ice Continent which is why she saved it for last. Frieza's henchmen are able to retrieve the last ball before the heroes arrive. Frieza descends to the planet and takes the Balls using his telekinesis.

After the battle with Broly becomes intense enough to destroy the surrounding landscape, Kikono suggests moving the Dragon Balls away from the battle in Frieza's spaceship. This allows Cheelai and Lemo to steal them, forcing Kikono to read them the instructions for making a wish. Cheelai is bemused at how simple the process is. They use this wish to save Broly from being killed by Gogeta, teleporting him back to Vampa at the last second.

Super Hero[]

After Piccolo's first encounter with Gamma 2, he seeks out Dende, hoping to use the same technique as Grand Elder Guru to increase his strength and combat the android threat. Dende is unable to do so due to his age but offers to upgrade Shenron's wish-granting powers to include this ability. After a ritual, Shenron is immediately upgraded and Piccolo contacts Bulma to ask for use of the Dragon Balls. It is revealed that Bulma has had Capsule Corporation staff retrieving the balls constantly after their use, supposedly to keep them out of the hands of evildoers. However, Piccolo quickly learns that she has been routinely asking Shenron for cosmetic improvements to her own body, much to his disgust.

Piccolo then summons Shenron and asks for his potential to be unlocked. Shenron grants this wish, plus 'a little extra', boosting Piccolo's strength substantially and later allowing him access to a new, powerful form. Bulma uses the remaining wishes to perk up her rear and lengthen her eyelashes; Piccolo realizes only too late that these wishes could easily have been used to bring Goku and Vegeta to assist them in the fight against the Red Ribbon Army.

Video Game Appearances[]

The Dragon Balls appear in nearly all the franchise's video games.

In Dragon Ball Z: Attack of the Saiyans, Mr. Popo creates his own set of Dragon Balls after Goku's resurrection and Kami's death. This version of Shenron isn't as powerful and cannot be used to wish back deceased characters, but has the advantage of being able to be reused constantly after being regathered and they are also capable of summoning someone as powerful as Legendary Super Saiyan Broly to Earth (or at the very least create a convincing copy of him, as he can be defeated by the Z Fighters despite the fact that the game occurs before the Namek Saga and it would be very unlikely that the Z Fighters would be capable of defeating the real Legendary Super Saiyan at that point).

In Dragon Ball Z: Shin Budokai - Another Road, which takes place in Future TrunksAlternate TimelineFuture Janemba takes the Dragon Balls and after he is defeated, Future Babidi steals them. While Vegito fights against Future Super Buu, Future Babidi invokes Shenron. While he was doing his wish, he is cut off by Future Mr. Satan who wishes to become the most popular person in the universe.

In Dragon Ball Online, it is revealed that in Age 787 Dende deactivated the Dragon Balls of Earth due to Elder Kai's warnings and the Earth being at peace (thus preventing the Dragon Ball from being overused and thus the appearance of the Shadow Dragons in Age 790 never occurs as it did in the GT Timeline). Eventually in Age 999 Dende reactivates the Earth's Dragon Balls after Time Patrol Trunks warns him about the threat posed by Mira, in the hopes that a savior would appear. However this time Dende creates multiple sets of Dragon Balls, weaker than the originals, hoping that the young warriors will benefit from competing over them. The presence of multiple sets allows for warriors of diverse skill levels to have a realistic hope of gathering all seven. Afraid of them being exploited, Dende limits their power, restricting the wishes that can be made. One of these sets is apparently provided to Chronoa and the Time Patrol.

In Dragon Ball XenoverseFuture Trunks asks Shenron for a strong ally with enough power to defeat time itself. By this wish, Shenron summons the Future Warrior. In center of Toki Toki City's Plaza of Time there is a Dragon Ball Altar where the Dragon Balls collected by Time Patrollers are kept and where Shenron is summoned when all seven are collected. A female Time Patroller named Amura stands next to the Altar and makes various comments about making wishes Shenron such as wondering if Shenron would get mad if she wished for 100 wishes or wishing for Shenron to be her friend. Dragon Balls can be obtained during Parallel quests, if obtained the player will receive a message saying "Key Item obtained" and must complete the quest to collect the Dragon Ball. There is also an obtainable color customizable outfit for Earthlings and Saiyans called the 4-Star Dragon Ball Costume which is a luxurious Gi with a design based on the 4-Star Dragon Ball and features a fake 4-Star Dragon Ball incorporated into the upper body portion of the outfit.

In Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Turles attempts to use the Namekian Dragon Balls to wish for Immortality, but is stopped by his cohort Lord Slug who also desires immortality so he can rule the universe. Before they can fight over who will get to make a wish, the Future Warrior appears and they form a temporary truce to deal with the Patroller but are ultimately defeated by the Warrior and Future Trunks. Interestingly in Parallel Quest 44: "Dragon Balls of the Future", the Dragon Balls mysteriously reactivate in a parallel version Future Trunks' timeline despite Future Kami's death, forcing Future Trunks to keep them from Future 17Future 18, and reactivated Future 16. Exactly how they were able to reactivate in Trunks' timeline without Kami is never explained, though presumably it may have something to do with the time fragment that particular parallel timeline is found in. In The Emperor's Return Saga, it is revealed that Towa altered the history of Age 779 so that Dragon Balls second wish (which had been taken by the Pilaf Gang in the original history) was used to revive Cooler who was than transformed into Metal Cooler, thus Metal Cooler participates in his brother's training and takes part in Frieza's revenge against Goku and the Z Fighters in Age 779.

In Xenoverse 2, Dragon Balls are collected in much the same way as they were in Xenoverse by defeating Time Patroller NPCs in battle, though this is made slightly more easier as Time Patrollers often appear in teams of three when encountered in Parallel Quests. The Future Warrior may also occasionally receive a Dragon Ball as login in bonus, though if they have already obtained all seven when they receive the bonus they will receive a Hercule Badge instead. The Warrior can also obtain Dragon Balls from defeating Time Patroller NPCs encountered in Conton City, though unlike those encountered in Parallel Quests, they are guaranteed to drop a Dragon Ball provided the Future Warrior hasn't collected all seven. However these NPCs can only be fought once per character file, though it is possible to create a save file and defeat one then delete said save file to get another Dragon Ball from the same NPC which can be used as an easy way to obtain Dragon Balls as the inventory is shared across character files. Also in Conton City one can see a giant Shenron-like dragon that floats in the sky north of Conton City. It is later revealed that this dragon was the dragon statue found on the Dragon Ball Pedestal in Xenoverse which Chronoa had animated after hearing rumors doubting the power of gods like herself and Elder Kai, however it grew so large it turn Toki Toki City into ruins, forcing them to build Conton City over the ruins and the seemingly alive dragon statue was relocated north of the city. The Dragon Ball Pedestal was eventually restored with a new dragon statue. During their investigation of the Guru's House time rift anomaly where they aid Nail in protecting the Namekian Dragon Balls from the Frieza Force. If Future Warrior meets Grand Elder Guru after having their potential unlocked (Attribute Level Cap unlocked), who will teach the Warrior how to increase the power of the Dragon Balls in Conton City, unlocking extra wish options the next time they use the Dragon Balls and each subsequent after that. Chronoa also explains to the 2nd Future Warrior that the Dragon Balls in Conton City are one of multiple sets created by Dende, though the ones used in Toki Toki City and Conton City are weaker than the others. She explains they were originally meant to be a training reward but ended up creating a way for endless wishes due to the nature of Conton City as a place where multiple timelines intersect (allowing Dragon Balls to be used multiple times by the Time Patrol without a waiting period of them being inactive). Though they are weaker, they still possess enough power to grant Future Trunks' wish to summon a warrior strong enough to defend history as shown by the Future Warrior in Xenoverse. Due to how they are obtained in the Xenoverse series, it is unclear how or where they scatter though since they are obtained mainly from Time Patrollers they presumably scatter around Toki Toki City/Conton City as it is unlikely that Chronoa would allow them to scatter through time due to the danger. Chronoa referring to them as a source of unlimited wishes implies that there is no danger of them cracking from a buildup of negative energy (indicating they can contain it more effectively or do not produce enough negative energy to crack them due to being weaker than the Earth's Dragon Balls), as Chronoa and the Time Patrol are fully aware that overusing the Dragon Balls resulted in the birth of the Shadow Dragons in the GT Timeline and would likely curb their usage if there was a danger of them producing Shadow Dragons. Alternatively Chronoa's power over time may allow her to effect the Dragon Balls in such a way that the negative energy dissipates far more quickly than the Earth's Dragon Balls. As these Dragon Balls do not seem to go into a period of dormancy where they turn to stone, it is possible that they do not produce negative energy as part of the reason the Dragon Balls become inert after being used is to give time for the negative energy to dissipate.

The 4-Star Dragon Ball Costume from Xenoverse returns as an obtainable outfit. Additionally Gohan's Four-Star Dragon Ball Hat also appears as an obtainable accessory as well.

In Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, Gohan receives his Four-Star Dragon Ball Hat from his parents shortly before he and Goku go to Kame House for Goku's reunion with Bulma, Krillin, and Master Roshi, which is ironically fortunate as the ball later allows Goku and Piccolo to track down Raditz when he kidnaps Gohan (the anime filler involving the Sabertooth Cat and river rescue does not take place in Kakarot. The Dragon Balls are used during the first two Sagas as they were in the main series.

During the Intermission after the Frieza Saga, after the Namekians have relocated to New Namek, Bulma contacts Gohan and tells him the Earth Dragon Balls have recharged and that he should try collecting them. This introduces the Dragon Ball collection and Making Wishes to Shenron. Interestingly, the Dragon Balls can be used to revive bosses defeated in the main story such as RaditzNappaDodoriaZarbon, and the Ginyu Force minus their still living Captain which will allow the player to partake in a Sub Story featuring which ever villain that has been revived.
